LGBTQ+ Basics
This introductory training offers an overview of youth with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities including those who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer.
This nonjudgmental conversation will allow participants to:
- learn key terms
- gain insight into the unique challenges often faced by LGBTQ+ you and their families
- acquire strategies to support LGBTQ+ teens
This session is for parents, community members, and educators who want to begin to understand and recognize internal and external struggles often faced by LGBTQ+ youth.

Participants need to have access to a solid internet connection and must download Zoom prior to the session. The Zoom link will be sent out the morning of the session.
About the Speaker:
Matthew Phillips, LCSW, MEd
Matthew is a licensed clinical social worker and sex therapist in Stamford, CT. Through individual and couples therapy, he empowers adolescent and adult clients to grow and change in response to challenges with depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship, sexual function, and identity. He practices from a social justice perspective and specializes in working with those who have had their sexuality, gender, and relationships marginalized, especially members of the LGBTQ+ community. Matthew has spent over fifteen years working as a therapist and manager in psychiatric hospital and non-profit residential child welfare settings. He has master’s degrees in social work and human sexuality and is currently a PhD student at the Center for Human Sexuality Studies at Widener University. He also serves as adjunct faculty in Widener University’s Center for Social Work Education.
