Poetry explication
Introduction
An explication is a close analysis of a poem or a passage in poetry. Its main objective is to explain the poem in detail in terms of its function. There is an explanation of its diction, stanza, line structure, meter, rhythm, and imagery. This paper entails an explication of Roethke’s, My Papa’s waltz poem. The explication is on the basis of the rhetorical situation, the form, and the language of the poet.
Rhetorical situation
A young is boy complaining of going to bed when his parents are still up. Right before he goes to bed, he dances with his drunken father. The alcohol on his father’s breath and the pace of his waltz makes the boy dizzy. He narrates that it is more like a gamble than a serious ballroom dance. As his father keeps the beat on the boy’s head with rough hands, his ears get scraped. All along, the boy is apprehensive about upsetting his mother and even though his father is being bumpy, he always clings on him.
Form of the poem
This poem has a simple rhyme scheme in every other line within the stanzas. Most of the rhymes are slant rhymes meaning that they are not direct rhymes. For example in the first stanza:
The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy
But I hung on like death
Such waltzing was not easy
The words in the alternating lines rhyme; the word breath rhymes with death while the word dizzy has a slant rhyme with the word easy because it is not a perfect rhyme. This poem is an iamb trimeter since it has only three stressed syllables per line. An iamb is an unstressed word followed by a stressed one. An example of an iamb in this poem is the words “I am” while an example of three stressed syllables is in the bold words in the first line of the first stanza below:
The whisk/ey on your breath
Language
The word choice of “romp” reflects a playful tone in the poem where the two dance freely on the upbeat waltz versions. Again, the writer refers to his father as “papa” portraying extreme affection even though it does not appear in the poem. The words “my” could not necessarily be in the poem’s title or inside the poem. The speaker intends to express his relationship between a son and a father as he grows up.
Metaphor and simile
There is more in a poem than what calls the eye, for instance, the father and son’s dance turns in to a romp.
The waltz was not easy for the boy for he has to hang on his father “like death”. This is a metaphor implicating that their relationship was not easy. In lines 9- 10, the father keeps confusing, missing the steps and scratching the child in the process. This is a metaphor showing that the father could hurt the son in his maturity into an adult. In lines 15-16, there is the child’s last dance prior to bed time because he does not want to let go off his father’s shirt. This image of the whipping of the child to sleep implicates that even though the father was tough, the son still loves him immensely. In line 3, the speaker uses a simile in narrating that he hangs on to his father like death. As much as the father is rough on him, he still clings to him.
Alliteration and assonance
The repetition of consonant sounds at the start of words is alliteration while assonance refers to word replication, for instance, sound “w” in the words waltzing makes the waltz sound ordinary and soothing, but the true indications are contrary. In lines 7-8, the sound “c” in the words “countenance/ is an alliteration, whereby the mother is giving a warning in her parenting. Assonance in “My papa’s Waltz is in the words breadth and death, head and bed, and dirt and shirt.
