Gilles CHATARD Quartet

Espace Noriac
10 rue Jules Noriac - 87000 LIMOGES
More details

It was a long-standing date, but beyond the project and the concert, it is a life path reaching its culmination. A trumpet and bugle player, a singer, Gilles CHATARD has spent his life “right past music”, “right past jazz”, as though he had never really declared them his love, out of modesty, out of humility, out of respect … but temptation was ingrained for so long. Over time, all the steps have been completed, with this only constant : the taste for a work well done, for the right and beautiful tone, for a well-placed and expressive voice. Everything is there now and the few caring friends know it and no longer hesitate to be guided to “the heart of music”, to “the heart of jazz” by such a generous personality. A quartet, like a hand-sewn jewel box, with Patrick PEYRIERAS (piano and arrangements), both considerate and provocative, Marc Michel LE BEVILLON (double bass), an infallible clock where the low notes exude a deep joy and Éric JACCARD (drums), a perfect rhythm and beat to live the moment to the fullest. This date will be a milestone.

Roberto FONSECA " La Gran Diversion "

24/11/2023 - 20:00 to 21:30
Opéra de Limoges
place Stalingrad - 87000 LIMOGES
More details

Pianist Roberto Fonseca proposes this year an exceptional project, a reinvention of the Cuban Cabin, the legendary cabaret of the Montmartre of the 1930s. An invitation to dance to the sound of the heady classics of the roaring twenties in Cuba. If Roberto Fonseca’s name is today synonymous with renewal of a Cuban music open to everything, from hip-hop to electronic musics , including soul or funk, the pianist remains attached to the extraordinary heritage of his island. It was, incidentally, within the legendary Buena Vista Social Club that he was discovered in the early 2000s. Today, he turns to the golden era of Cuban music by rendering the décor and bubbling atmosphere of the Cabin, a cabaret where the whole Paris of the 1930s came to dance the mambo, the rumba or the salsa. A festive and immersive time travel in which the audience is invited to enter, like a date given to swing, dance and sensuality, at a time when there is a need for it everyday.

Bertrand BELIN " Tambour Vision "

23/11/2023 - 20:00 to 21:30
Opéra de Limoges
place Stalingrad - 87000 LIMOGES
More details

Bertrand BELIN is of that caliber. For nearly twenty years now this son of a fisherman, under his Breton poet’s composure, has been setting his sharp look on a collapsing society and on individuals (he’d rather say people) who struggle with their cravings and their destinies. A career made of songs, novels, parts in theatre or cinema, a generous course but without fuss, an irregular but lucid trajectory. For his seventh record, “Tambour Vision”, we find the musical device dear to Belin : simple themes, repeated and catchy with variations that only attentive and successive listenings can unveil. Desiring, however, to propose something different, the Breton traded the rough minerality of “Persona” for a synthetic world in which the drum machines, the synths, sometimes the brass instruments, sketch out a sweet electronic atmosphere that invites you to shake your heads and arms. But beware, “Tambour Vision” is not that little electro-pop record that will help you pass the time on your way to the French Riviera or the Basque Country next summer. Because as always with Belin, music is here only to serve a voice (as mysterious and sensuous as ever) but above all the texts, crafted, free of fat, carved to the bone. Thus as soon as the record opens : “Carnival, I saw the ass, From my head, I shouted victory, I shouted defeat”. Everything is already there : poetry, roughness, life.

Festen " Replicant "

22/11/2023 - 20:00 to 21:30
Centre Culturel Jean Moulin
76 rue des Sagnes - 87280 LIMOGES
More details

It is now ten years since FESTEN has been brilliantly unfolding their alternative jazz. Passionate about film music, the four musicians have developed over the years a language of their own : a minimalist music carried by a great energy inspired by the rock of the 90s. The group has five records to its credit with cinema as a thread. After the success of their “Inside Stanley Kubrick” released in 2018 on the LABORIE Jazz label, FESTEN present “Replicant”, inspired by the synthetic and dark world of Blade Runner. “Replicant”, their new album, also on the LABORIE Jazz label, a musical spin-off of the film Blade Runner by Ridley Scott, opens with Roy Batty’s monologue, the enigmatic and tortured character. He tells the story of his long journey and his quest for truth, his crossing along the shoulder of Orion to the Tannhäuser door. A powerful odyssey that, over the tracks, carries the listener into a decadent instrumental world which questions on mankind. A high-flying performance.

Sébastien FARGE " Origines "

21/11/2023 - 20:00 to 21:30
Centre Culturel Jean Gagnant
7 avenue Jean Gagnant - 87000 LIMOGES
More details

We remember Sébastien Farge after his Grand Prix du Disque “Gus Viseur 2015”, where his emotional tribute to Jean Ségurel , combined with a few personal compositions, confirmed an immense talent and suggested an unusual vision of the accordion in the service of music. With a passion for his instrument and its history, a consultant for Maugein, the last French manufacture of accordions, a tireless worker and composer, Sébastien Farge has matured this broadening to jazz and improvised musics. A few months ago, while designing and writing “Origines”, Sébastien, deep down inside, had that feeling and that will to pull together all he had inside himself to give the accordion new titles to be conquered, the assertion of the beauty of this instrument and of the sounds produced. His progress in this musical aesthetics has confronted him and confirmed him in the eyes and ears of strong personalities such as Sylvain Luc, Bernard Cavanna, Roland Romanelli … A voice is now emerging, a reality and an assessment, that of a complex mechanism at the service of the most beautiful emotions thanks to a style of writing and an exceptional touch. In late 2022, Jazz Magazine voted him among the three best accordionists with Vincent PEIRANI and Lionel SUAREZ.

Trio ETE " The Usefull Report "

20/11/2023 - 20:00 to 21:30
Centre Culturel Jean Gagnant
7 avenue Jean Gagnant - 87000 LIMOGES
More details

It is about twenty years since the Trio, the beating heart of MégaOctet , have been digging their way and created their own sound. With “Useful Report”, the trio’s 4th recording, the goal is now to draw up a condition of the world. To start with the sad observation that it puts interest ahead of life, superficiality ahead of depth, appearance ahead of being. The motto of “Useful Report” lies perhaps in these words : to restore life to the center. When you write about a trio that combines writing and improvisation, it is a cliché to mention “complicity”, mainly when the musicians have been playing together for 20 years. The listener does not really attend a dialogue between three musicians, but rather a polyphonic monologue. Andy ELMER often says that the trio is the soloist, he means a “journey” in which the sound material is constantly moving. A music that IS, quite simply and so beautifully.

In the tradition of the great African-American musicians, Steve Coleman transcends the boundaries of Jazz. An exceptional saxophone player, composer and artist, curious of everything, federator of an outstanding prolific work, Steve Coleman is above all an enthusiast of sound research, capable of partnering with the hip-hop scene as well as frequenting the Ircam. Recognized as one of the most influent musicians of his generation and one of the most important saxophone players of the past thirty years, Steve Coleman, since the beginning of his career, has followed his own path, refusing any style or gender labeling. Infused with Charlie Parker as well as Ornette Coleman, he has imposed himself as one of the most distinctive voices of jazz saxophone. Cofounder of the M-BASE movement in the mid-80s, where soul intelligence met research, his harmonic conception, his work on rhythmic patterns as his integration of funk and hip-hop have influenced a great number of existing groups and made him a leading musician.

In a jungle rich in resonant grooves and captivating melodies, funk spirit meets jazz and the soul of the 70s. The tenor saxophone’s optimistic breath, with its direct and generous sound, conjures up Pharao Sanders’s spectre. A joyous and radiant concert like a dreamlike film journey through a nature in constant renaissance. With his crew composed of Arnaud Roulin (Hammond organ), Sylvie Daniel (bass), Philippe Glazes (drums), and Roger Raspail (percussions), Laurent Bardainne keeps taking us far from the current toxic atmosphere. This applies particularly to “Destination Danger” (“Danger Man”) and “Combly Family” which perfectly illustrate the sunbeams travelling through our ears.

This year 2023 sees Kaz Hawkins celebrate her 50th birthday, an age that she would never have dreamt of reaching. She thus wished to make this year a big party, an exceptional event in an exceptional life. And what is more exceptional than the release of her new album with brand new compositions ? This is how “Until We Meet Again” was born, an album in its creator’s image, full of bright colours and positive vibes, turned towards others to help them find the strength to struggle and survive. An unclassifiable work combining heartfelt ballads, gospel songs, rock guitar solos and even Irish sounds. With her eyes firmly focused on a promising future, Kaz Hawkins starts this new chapter in a big laugh, as sparkling as her music. A “yellow banana” Festival opening, as we love them.
