Peter Singer, author of "Animal Liberation, is an ethical and political philosopher, professor of bioethics at Princeton University and laureate professor at the University of Melbourne. He has taught at the University of Oxford (UK), La Trobe University (AU), and Monash University (AU)/

He first became well-known internationally after the publication of Animal Liberation in 1975. This book helped to start the modern animal movement. He popularised the term "speciesism" to describe the practice of privileging humans over other animals, and therefore argues in favour of the equal consideration of interests of all sentient beings.

In 2006, Peter Singer was voted one of Australia's ten most influential public intellectuals. Recently, he has been named the world's third most influential contemporary thinker by the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute.

He is a cofounder of Animals Australia and the founder of The Life You Can Save.

Peter Singer is also a Vice President of the UK-based Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and a member of the Leadership Council of Oxfam America
